Bodum is recalling approximately 5.9 million French press coffee makers after reports that the replaceable glass carafes in certain models unexpectedly cracked or shattered during use, causing burn injuries.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on October 30. There have been 70 reports of the glass breaking, with 48 people reporting burn injuries from hot liquid.

Which coffee makers are affected

The recall covers Bodum 8-cup and 12-cup French press coffee makers with replaceable glass carafes, in the Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya models. The glass carafes can break when consumers use metal spoons or other metal utensils to stir coffee.

The affected coffee makers were sold through Amazon, Target, Walmart and other retailers nationwide. Owners should stop using the recalled carafes and contact Bodum for a remedy.

A kitchen staple under scrutiny

French presses are a fixture in millions of kitchens, and the Bodum recall is one of the largest coffee-maker recalls in years by unit count. The hazard is specific to the replaceable glass carafes in the 8-cup and 12-cup sizes — other Bodum products are not part of the recall.

The CPSC advises consumers to check the model name on their French press before their next brew. Anyone who has been using a metal spoon to stir should switch to wood or plastic in any glass carafe, recalled or not, as metal utensils are a known cause of glass stress.
