One person is dead and six others are injured after a shooting inside a Spirit Halloween store at Solano Town Center mall in Fairfield, California, on Friday night, with police hunting for the shooter and no suspect description yet released.
The Fairfield mall shooting happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. local time on Friday, October 30, according to Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall. Seven people suffered gunshot wounds; one died, and six were taken to local hospitals, at least three of them in critical condition.
A very active crime scene
“This is still a very active crime scene,” Fairfield police said in a written statement, and Chief Marshall told reporters late on Friday: “There is still a very active crime scene and investigation going on right now.” Officers found victims with gunshot wounds across three locations at the shopping centre, and the mall remained sealed off as detectives interviewed witnesses and studied camera footage.
Federal help is on the ground: the FBI’s Sacramento office said it was deploying its Evidence Response Team to assist Fairfield police. Police have released no suspect description, no motive and no victim names or ages, and have not said whether one person or more than one fired the shots.
A Halloween weekend shattered
The shooting took place hours before Halloween itself, in a store full of families buying costumes. The store occupies the former Best Buy space inside a mall of about 130 stores off Travis Boulevard, in a city about 47 miles northeast of San Francisco, between Sacramento and the Bay Area.
Fairfield sits in Solano County, a working city where the mall serves as a gathering place for families across the region. On Friday night, a routine costume run ended in gunfire, grief and a search for answers that, as of Saturday morning, police had not yet found.
The questions police must answer
As the manhunt continues, Fairfield residents will want answers to basic questions: was this targeted or random, was there one shooter or more, and how did gunfire erupt inside a busy store without warning? Police have released almost nothing so far — no suspect description, no motive, no victim names. That silence is normal in the first hours of a major investigation, but it will not hold public patience for long in a community that has just watched a family shopping trip turn into a crime scene.
