President Donald Trump warned Americans that U.S. elections are vulnerable to foreign interference and claimed China intervened in the 2020 election in an effort to prevent his victory during a primetime address to the nation.

Trump, who has repeatedly and baselessly claimed that his 2020 election defeat was the result of fraud, unveiled a collection of declassified documents as part of an effort to raise questions about election security less than four months before the November midterm elections.

Since returning to office in 2024, Trump has moved to expand federal influence over election administration, including the removal of key officials at the federal Election Assistance Commission, a bipartisan body that supports state and local election officials.

The president has also pushed lawmakers to pass the SAVE America Act, legislation that would introduce new requirements for voter registration and election procedures.
