A Brazilian Supreme Court justice has ordered a federal police investigation into links between a donor network co-founded by US Vice President JD Vance and the presidential campaign of Flavio Bolsonaro, according to the Washington Post and Brazilian court reporting. Supreme Court Justice Flavio Dino directed federal police on Tuesday to investigate whether the Rockbridge Network provided financial resources, personnel, services or other economic benefits to Bolsonaro’s campaign, according to Press TV and the court’s decision. Brazilian law strictly prohibits presidential candidates from receiving foreign campaign funding or assistance of any kind.
What investigators must establish
Dino’s decision directs police to establish what Rockbridge Network representatives discussed with businessmen Tallis Gomes and Pedro Sang, who paid foreign social media accounts to post Polymarket election odds favouring Bolsonaro, and whether talks were tied to foreign interest in Brazil’s rare earths and critical minerals, according to YAC News. Police must also examine deliberate asymmetries and algorithmic manipulation by internet companies. A separate track is examining election advertising linked to the predictions site Polymarket and to Meta, according to the Capitalism Institute. The inquiry runs under Supreme Court supervision because, Dino wrote, members of Congress may be involved.
Denials and the election backdrop
Rockbridge denies involvement, saying Brazilians made false representations about their relationship with the network and created documents referencing Rockbridge without its knowledge or consent, according to the Washington Post. Bolsonaro’s office has said the campaign received no foreign money or structure. Flavio Bolsonaro lost the October 25 runoff to incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, taking 48.21% to Lula’s 51.79%, according to the Capitalism Institute. He did not concede, and left Brazil for the United States amid a passport surrender order in a separate money-laundering investigation, according to Reuters. No court, prosecutor or news outlet has accused Vance himself of money laundering, according to Interstellar News.
