The Denver Broncos produced the comeback of NFL Week 8 on Sunday, rallying from 11 points down to beat the Kansas City Chiefs 28-24 at Empower Field at Mile High.

The Denver Broncos’ win was sealed in the most dramatic way possible: a goal-line stand on the final play, with Patrick Mahomes sacked by Malcolm Roach as Kansas City drove to the Broncos’ one-yard line.

Denver’s fourth-quarter surge

Kansas City led 24-13 after Mahomes threw his third touchdown pass, a four-yard effort to Noah Gray. Denver refused to fold. Bo Nix threw a touchdown pass and a two-point conversion, and Jonah Coleman scored on a five-yard run with 1:56 remaining to put the Broncos ahead.

Nix completed 20 of 32 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns, according to roundup reporting, and his composure in the fourth quarter was the difference between a respectable loss and a season-defining win.

Mahomes denied at the death

The Chiefs still had a chance. They drove to the Denver one-yard line in the closing seconds, but the Broncos’ defence held firm. Mahomes was sacked on the final play, and Denver celebrated a win that moved the Broncos to 6-2 and gave them control of the AFC West race.

Kansas City fell to 5-2, its second defeat of the season. The loss was notable for another reason reported after the game: it was only the third time in Mahomes’ career that he has lost a game in which his team led by 10 or more points in the final period.

A divisional statement

Denver has now won four games in a row, and this victory will resonate beyond one Sunday. Beating Kansas City, at home, from behind, with a goal-line stand, is the kind of result that changes how a team is viewed around the league.

The Chiefs remain dangerous, and nobody should write them off in November. But on this Sunday in Denver, the

Broncos were the better team when it mattered most.
