Elon Musk has emerged as the largest individual political donor in United States history, spending more than 442 million dollars on Republican campaigns and political groups ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, according to the latest campaign finance filings reported by The Hill and other outlets.
The billionaire chief executive of Tesla and SpaceX contributed an additional 76.8 million dollars to his America PAC over the past month, according to the filings. That took his total spending on the upcoming elections beyond 442 million dollars, on top of the 366 million dollars he had already spent supporting Republican candidates and affiliated groups.
Where the money is going
According to The Washington Post, Musk has directed much of his political spending towards helping Republicans retain control of Congress. A significant share has focused on the closely contested Texas Senate race, where Republican candidate and state Attorney General Ken Paxton is facing Democratic challenger James Talarico.
According to campaign finance filings cited by CBS News, Musk donated 158 million dollars to the Senate Leadership Fund, the principal super PAC supporting Republican Senate candidates, through two contributions in September. The group subsequently transferred corresponding amounts to a Texas-based political action committee supporting Paxton.
A record-breaking donor
Musk contributed 75 million dollars on September 9 and another 83 million dollars about two weeks later, according to the filings. Those donations accounted for more than half of the Senate Leadership Fund’s total receipts during the third quarter, CBS News reported.
America PAC, which Musk established during the 2024 election cycle, received the latest funds over approximately a week in October. Whether the record spending can move votes in the final 11 days remains the central question for both parties, as early voting surges and polling shows several key races within the margin of error.
Campaign finance filings are public records, and the scale of Musk’s spending has drawn attention precisely because a single donor can now rival the fundraising of entire party committees in a single cycle. Supporters argue that the money funds voter outreach and advertising in races where a few thousand votes could decide control of Congress, while critics say it concentrates influence in the hands of a small number of wealthy donors. Either way, the filings make the final weeks of the campaign among the most expensive in midterm history.
