Ford’s electric vehicle sales collapsed in October, falling 71.2% from a year earlier, even as the carmaker’s trucks delivered a solid month and kept total sales almost flat.

Ford Motor reported US sales of 174,123 vehicles in October, down 0.8% year on year. Truck sales rose 2.3% to 108,175 units, but SUV deliveries fell 4.7% to 62,856 and car sales dropped 19.6% to just 3,092.

Electric collapse, hybrid slide

The electric decline was stark. Ford sold only 1,355 battery-electric vehicles in October, down 71.2% from the same month last year. Total electrified vehicle sales — electrics plus hybrids — fell 31.7% to 15,173 units, with hybrid deliveries down 21% to 13,818.

The Mustang Mach-E, Ford’s flagship electric model, saw sales fall 57.4% to 1,239 units. Ford has pointed to the expiry of federal electric vehicle incentives and the discontinuation of the Escape and Lincoln Corsair, which continued to drag on hybrid results.

Trucks do the heavy lifting

The F-Series remained the bedrock of Ford’s business. Sales of America’s best-selling pickup rose 8.2% to 73,482 units in October. The Explorer surged 35.2% to 23,885, and the Maverick pickup gained 3.4%, although the Ranger fell 27%.

Year to date, Ford’s US sales are down 7.9% at about 1.69 million vehicles, according to the company’s figures. The October result leaves Ford trailing Toyota in the monthly brand table — Toyota sold 188,392 vehicles in the month — and underlines how quickly the US electric market has cooled since incentives ended.

Ford’s experience mirrors a wider industry pattern: hybrids, which need no charging infrastructure and carry no range anxiety, are taking a growing share of the market, while pure electric sales have stalled for several makers at once.
