Harry Styles Channels Elvis and Teen Self at Harryween

Harry Styles opened his Harryween shows at Madison Square Garden on October 30 dressed as Elvis Presley, according to People, JustJared and Parade, before changing into the outfit he wore for his X Factor audition as a teenager. The two-night Harryween run closes his 30-show Together, Together residency in New York, and the first night gave fans two costumes for the price of one.

Styles, 32, took the stage in a white bedazzled jumpsuit with colourful embellishments and a blue cape, according to JustJared, echoing Presley’s 1970s concert look, complete with sunglasses in the style Presley wore on stage. In the audience, according to Parade, was Riley Keough, Presley’s granddaughter, watching alongside Styles’ reported fiancée Zoë Kravitz, who was dressed as a devil in red with matching horns. Keough was seen dancing and filming the moment, according to video shared by JustJared.

The band dressed as Harry

The Elvis entrance was only the start of the costume parade. Styles’ band and dancers dressed as different versions of Styles himself, according to Rolling Stone coverage cited in concert reports, turning the show into a hall of mirrors. Each era the band wore was one the audience already knew, from early pop-star looks to later solo styles, and the joke landed because the crowd could read every reference on sight.

Then came the turn that drew the loudest nostalgia cheer. Styles changed into the striped outfit he wore as a 16-year-old auditioning for The X Factor and sang Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely”, the song he performed at that audition, according to multiple reports. It was a deliberately small, personal costume after the spectacle of Elvis, and it framed the night as a look back over his whole career.

A residency finale

Harryween last came to Madison Square Garden in 2021, during Styles’ Love on Tour run, and its return after five years was itself an event. The October 30 show was the penultimate night of the residency, with the Halloween-night finale on October 31 closing the 30-show run, according to JustJared. Manhattan’s borough president had declared October 30 Harry Styles Appreciation Day in the borough, according to concert coverage.

For fans, the night worked because it mixed tribute and self-portrait: Elvis for the King, and the teenage audition outfit for the boy who became a star. The second Harryween night, on Halloween itself, was left to top it.
