A Norwich City fan’s pitch-side marriage proposal went viral this week — for the brutal chant that greeted it, and for the club’s brilliant response.
Norwich supporter Jack Garwood proposed to his girlfriend Brandis at half-time of the Canaries’ Championship clash with West Brom at Carrow Road on Saturday, during the club’s weekly half-time crossbar challenge.
‘She said yes!’ — then the booing started
The presenter handed Jack the microphone, and Jack popped the question: “Brandis, I know you’re not expecting this but from the very moment I met you I knew you were the one for me. So Brandis, will you marry me?”
A speechless Brandis nodded, and the presenter declared: “She said yes!” But as the happy couple celebrated, the crowd started booing the moment, and the away end delivered a brutal chant: “You don’t know what you’re doing!”
The club makes it right
Norwich City made things even better by announcing the couple will go on honeymoon in Gran Canaria for five nights, with all costs covered by sponsors Turismo de Gran Canaria.
The couple will surely never forget the moment — and Norwich went on to beat West Brom 1-0 thanks to a last-gasp winner by Josh Sargent, making it a perfect day for the home fans, if not for the away end’s chanting.
The away end’s chant — “You don’t know what you’re doing!” — is a classic football terrace joke, usually aimed at the referee, and it turned a sweet moment into a viral one. But the club’s response is what made the story: a five-night honeymoon in Gran Canaria, covered by sponsors, for a couple who will never forget their half-time proposal. Norwich’s win, sealed by Sargent’s last-gasp goal, made it a perfect day for the home fans — and a story the couple will be telling at every anniversary.
