Victor Wembanyama scored 29 points as the San Antonio Spurs routed the Portland Trail Blazers 125-103 at the Moda Center on Saturday night, extending their winning streak to eight games.
Wembanyama added seven rebounds and the Spurs’ starters sat out the entire fourth quarter, such was the comfort of the win, according to Field Level Media and Sportradar. Devin Vassell scored 15 points and Stephon Castle added 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
The Spurs led by as many as 35 points, never trailed, and outrebounded Portland 51-38. San Antonio improve to 8-2, while the Blazers fall to 6-3.
Spurs roll on
The Spurs’ winning streak is now the story of the early NBA season. Eight straight wins, built on Wembanyama’s dominance at both ends of the floor and a supporting cast that is growing in confidence with every game.
Saturday’s win was their most comfortable of the run. They led from the start, built a 35-point advantage, and were able to rest their starters for the entire fourth quarter — a luxury no team takes for granted in the NBA.
Vassell and Castle provided the support, and the Spurs’ ball movement and three-point shooting overwhelmed a Portland defence that had no answer. Castle’s 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists underlined the depth around Wembanyama, with the Spurs now winning games even when their star does not have to carry them alone.
Portland’s bright spot
For Portland, there was at least one bright spot. Yang Hansen recorded his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Deni Avdija scored 15 and Damian Lillard added 12 points and seven assists.
But the Blazers, beaten 124-118 by the Lakers on Friday night in a game where Luka Doncic scored 53, have now lost two in a row after a strong start to the season. They will need to regroup quickly.
What comes next
San Antonio’s eight-game winning streak is their best run of the season, and they are now one of the most talked-about teams in the league. The Spurs will look to extend it further in their next game, while Portland must find a way to stop the slide.
