Rapper Gree is not preparing to marry his girlfriend, his agency has said, calling the claims “unfounded” after remarks on a TV show were misunderstood.
Gree, whose real name is Kim Dong-hyun and who is the son of broadcaster Kim Gu-ra, drew attention after saying on E Channel’s “Seo In-young’s Trendy Old Fogey”, which aired on November 5, that he was preparing to get married.
“The claim is unfounded”
A representative of Gree’s agency, Brand New Music, said on November 6: “The rumors about Gree getting married are unfounded. It seems his remarks on the show were misunderstood.” The agency explained that Gree is dating his girlfriend but is not preparing to get married.
On the show, Gree had joked: “Have me back for the marriage episode. I’m preparing to get married.” Host Seo In-young played along, saying: “I’m preparing to get married too.” His father Kim Gu-ra drew a line at the time, saying: “The marriage preparations are just part of the setup. It’s an alter ego, like Tanaka. Of course, he does have a girlfriend he’s dating, but it’s not about getting married.”
A rumour that would not die
Gree mentioned marriage again on a show, reigniting the rumours, but his agency has now officially denied them as well. Gree, born in 1998, went public with his relationship last March, revealing on Hong Jin-kyung’s YouTube channel that he had been dating his girlfriend for a long time.
The episode is a reminder of how quickly a joke on a variety show can become a headline — and why agencies move fast to correct the record when a star’s personal life is involved.
