Jailer 2 has made a strong start at the UK and Ireland box office, opening with £754,000 from just 230 cinemas, according to weekly chart reporting for the October 16-18 weekend. The Tamil blockbuster, starring Rajinikanth as Muthuvel Pandian, placed fifth in the UK and Ireland chart, with a £3,365 per-cinema average that topped many wider releases.

The Jailer 2 box office result is impressive because it came from a limited release. With only 230 cinemas, compared to 594 for Street Fighter, Jailer 2’s per-screen average was among the weekend’s highest, and its total including previews reached about £1.1 million in the UK and Ireland.

A Sequel With Festival Momentum

Jailer 2 is the sequel to the 2023 blockbuster Jailer, in which Rajinikanth played Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer drawn back into action. The sequel, released on October 15, 2026, arrived in the heart of the festive season, alongside other major South Indian releases including Dhanush’s OM and Vijay Deverakonda’s Ranabaali.

That festive clash — three major Tamil and Telugu titles competing in the same period — made Jailer 2’s UK performance even more notable. In a crowded market, Rajinikanth’s star power cut through, drawing diaspora audiences to cinemas in strong numbers.

Producers had denied postponement rumours and stuck to the October 15 date, according to FilmiMagic’s October release coverage, a decision that appears to have paid off.

Why Jailer 2 Matters Beyond India

South Indian cinema has become a global box-office force, with Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films regularly opening strongly in the UK, North America and the Gulf. Jailer 2’s UK result is part of that trend, showing that diaspora audiences will turn out in large numbers for a major star-led release, even from a limited number of screens.

For UK cinemas, Jailer 2’s per-screen average is a reminder that diverse programming can be commercially successful. A film that plays to a specific audience can outperform wider releases on a per-screen basis, even if its total gross is smaller.

As Jailer 2 continues its run, its UK and international totals will be watched as a measure of Rajinikanth’s enduring appeal — and of South Indian cinema’s growing global footprint.
