Jean Smart has completed a perfect sweep, winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the fifth time for Hacks — meaning she won the Emmy for every season of the show’s run. The victory, at the 78th Emmy Awards on 14 September 2026, was the headline acting win of the night and the closing chapter of a remarkable run, according to NPR and Screen Realm.

Five seasons, five wins

Smart won the comedy actress prize for her portrayal of tenacious stand-up comic Deborah Vance in each of Hacks’ five seasons, making her the first performer to win an Emmy for every season of a series. The victory was her eighth acting Emmy overall, putting her alongside Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus at the top of the all-time performer tally, according to Screen Realm. Allison Janney also reached eight acting Emmys on the same night, winning Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for The Diplomat.

A farewell to Deborah Vance

Hacks has now concluded, and Smart’s final win capped the fifth and final season exactly as each of the previous four had ended: with another Emmy. She beat Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), Elle Fanning (Margo’s Got Money Troubles) and Lisa Kudrow (The Comeback) to the prize. Rhea Seehorn, meanwhile, finally became an Emmy winner on the same night, after years as one of the ceremony’s most notable omissions.

A record that may never be matched

Winning for every season of a show is a record that requires both longevity and consistency — and a show that ends at the right time. Smart’s run with Deborah Vance delivered all three. For Hacks, it was the perfect ending; for Smart, it was a place in Emmy history that no one else occupies.
