Matthew Rhys became the first person ever to win two lead acting awards in a single night at the Emmy Awards, taking home Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Netflix’s The Beast in Me. The historic double was the headline of the 78th Emmy Awards, held on Monday, 14 September 2026, and it continues to dominate awards conversation into November.

A first that may stand for years

Rhys won the comedy prize for his performance in Widow’s Bay, the Apple TV horror comedy that took Outstanding Comedy Series and dominated the night with 14 awards across the main and Creative Arts ceremonies, according to Screen Daily. He then won the limited-series prize for his darker performance opposite Claire Danes in The Beast in Me. No performer had previously won lead performance awards in two categories in the same year, according to NPR.

The shows behind the wins

Widow’s Bay completed a monster Emmy run, with Rhys joined on the winners’ list by Kate O’Flynn for Supporting Actress and Stephen Root for Supporting Actor. The Pitt, HBO Max’s medical drama, held onto the drama crown, with Noah Wyle claiming his second consecutive Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series win. The ceremony, hosted by Mariska Hargitay at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, handed out 19 televised prizes on its third and final night.

Why the double matters

The double win puts Rhys in rare company and underlines a career that has moved from The Americans to two very different 2026 roles — one comic, one chilling. For the Television Academy, it was the kind of first that gives an awards night its headline. For Rhys, it was a night no actor had ever had before.
