Mercedes-Benz has launched the all-new GLC Electric in India — and it is already sold out until March 2027, with more than 1,000 bookings placed before the car was even officially on sale.
The electric SUV, launched on November 4 at an introductory price of ₹78.50 lakh (ex-showroom), arrives in a single, fully loaded GLC 400 4MATIC variant. It is locally assembled at Mercedes-Benz’s Chakan plant near Pune, making it the new entry point to the brand’s electric SUV line-up in India.
Managing Director and CEO Santosh Iyer told Autocar Professional that the company has received more than 1,000 bookings and that the order book is full until March 2027. He said he is asking Mercedes-Benz’s global leadership for more cars and more kits so that more units can be built in India.
What buyers get
The GLC 400 4MATIC is built on a dedicated electric platform, not a converted petrol GLC. It carries a 94kWh battery and two electric motors, one on each axle, delivering all-wheel drive and a claimed WLTP range of 711 kilometres on a single charge. Power is rated at around 490bhp, with 800Nm of torque.
The SUV uses an 800-volt charging architecture, allowing rapid top-ups at compatible fast chargers, and comes with the technology-focused cabin that has become a Mercedes-Benz signature, including the brand’s latest digital displays and driver assistance systems.
At ₹78.50 lakh, the electric GLC is priced below its petrol-powered namesake, a deliberate move by Mercedes-Benz to make the electric version the more attractive buy. The company has not said how long the introductory price will stay valid.
A sign of India’s EV shift
The sell-out is the latest sign that India’s luxury car market is embracing electric vehicles faster than many expected. Mercedes-Benz says bookings opened in October, and within 36 hours of expressions of interest opening on October 5, the company had received more than 650 enquiries.
Deliveries are set to begin in mid-November, in time for Diwali, with the first customers taking delivery of a car that, for now, cannot be bought at any price until March. For Mercedes-Benz, the problem is a happy one — and a measure of how far India’s EV market has come.
