A Florida mother and her 11-year-old son spent hours trapped on their kitchen counter as floodwaters filled their home — until two teenage neighbours arrived by kayak and paddleboard to save them, and their three dogs.

Brittany Grant’s home in Palm Bay, Florida, was flooded on Tuesday after heavy rainfall across Brevard County. She called 911 three times, but was told emergency resources were unavailable because of the flooding. With water rising and no clear way out, she turned to Facebook to ask for help.

A neighbour’s sons answer the call

Her post caught the attention of Stephanie Fanguy, a neighbour who alerted her two teenage sons, Jonah and Lucas Marshall. The brothers decided to head to Grant’s home, bringing a borrowed kayak and an inflatable paddleboard to navigate the flooded streets. Jonah, 15, borrowed a neighbour’s kayak, while his 17-year-old brother Lucas brought his paddleboard, accompanied by another neighbour.

The rescue was not a typical neighbourhood errand. Grant, her son and all three dogs needed to get out of the flooded property, through water deep enough to submerge roads and make it difficult for emergency crews to reach residents. The brothers eventually managed to bring the whole family — two people and three dogs — to safety.

“The community came together”

Grant said she had not expected the people who came to help to be teenagers. “The community came together and saved us,” she said, adding that the experience restored her faith in humanity. Grant and her son are now staying with a friend after leaving their flooded home, which sustained water damage.

The story, published on 6 November 2026, is a reminder of what happens when official help cannot reach a street: neighbours fill the gap, sometimes with nothing more than a borrowed kayak, a paddleboard and a willingness to paddle into floodwater for strangers. Jonah and Lucas did not wait to be asked twice — and a family of five, dogs included, is safe because of it.
