PREGNANT, CHAINED… AND SENTENCED TO DIE FOR HER FAITH
In 2014, Meriam (also spelled Mariam) Yahia Ibrahim Ishag, a Sudanese Christian and medical doctor, became the focus of worldwide attention after a Sudanese court sentenced her to 100 lashes and death by hanging. The court ruled that because her father was considered Muslim, she could not legally identify as a Christian and accused her of apostasy after she refused to renounce her faith.
At the time, Meriam was eight months pregnant and already caring for her young son inside prison. She was reportedly kept in shackles during parts of her imprisonment and gave birth to her daughter, Maya, while still incarcerated. Her death sentence was postponed because of her pregnancy, but she remained behind bars as her case sparked global outrage from governments, religious leaders, and human rights organizations.
After intense international pressure, an appeals court overturned her conviction in June 2014 and ordered her release. Although she briefly faced additional legal obstacles before leaving Sudan, she was eventually able to reunite with her family and start a new life. In later interviews, Meriam said the experience strengthened rather than weakened her faith.
Her story remains one of the most widely known modern cases involving religious freedom, highlighting the risks some people have faced for refusing to abandon their beliefs.
